Academics

Joining a sorority in college is a life-changing experience, but garnering an education is the top priority for Kappa. This is why each chapter is expected to maintain academic standards equal to or higher than their university’s or college’s all-sorority GPA. Additionally, each chapter establishes a GPA requirement for active members.

If a Kappa struggles academically, we help her through it. The Academic Excellence Team meets with her to craft an improvement plan using study tactics and time management. We want each sister to leave college with what they came for: a degree.

Academics in Eta Omicron

Leaving home and going to college is a time for growth and transformation, and sorority life is an amazing opportunity for a woman to surround herself with hardworking women of different interests and perspectives. We believe this experience is an investment in all of our futures, which is why our chapter is expected to keep an average GPA that is equal to or higher than the all-sorority GPA at Northeastern.

However, the women of Eta Omicron go above and beyond these expectations. We are incredibly proud of our chapter for achieving an average GPA of 3.71 in the Spring 2021 Semester, with 32 women earning a perfect 4.0 GPA during this challenging hybrid semester.

With that, we understand that college is not easy, and if a Kappa struggles academically, we help her through it. Academic Progress Plans (APPs) are given to women who express the need for academic resources, and each woman on APP is assigned a study buddy within the chapter who checks on them weekly to see how their classes are going or if they need any help finding academic resources. Sisters can stay on APP for however many semesters they’d like, until they feel they no longer need the additional support.

During the new member period, we pair each new member with an older academic mentor within their same college or major. This mentor is a great additional resource for new members to have, and they can ask them about which classes and professors to take, or about co-op experiences they might be interested in pursuing during their time at Northeastern.

Every woman in Kappa is encouraged to pursue her own interests. The women of Eta Omicron have started clubs such as the Women’s Interdisciplinary Society for Entrepreneurship and helped establish honor societies such as Upsilon Phi Delta, a healthcare administration honor society. They serve on the executive boards of other organizations, such as the Northeastern University Marketing Association (NUMA), and NUImpact, Northeastern’s student-run impact investing fund. They have pursued incredible co-op experiences in many different fields, ranging from working at Apple Music in Los Angeles to the African Center for Community Investment in Health in Kenya.

All women in Kappa are celebrated for their achievements. We encourage every Kappa to take advantage of the boundless opportunities at Northeastern and make the most of their college experience.
